Port Moresby hosts Regional Building Capacity in Managing Court Data Workshop

The Honourable Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika, KBE CSM OBE and the Pacific Judicial Strengthening Initiative (PJSI) hosted the Regional Building Capacity in Managing Court Data Workshop in Port Moresby from 26 to 30 November, 2018. The workshop was attended by 35 representatives from 13 participating pacific islands and their Judiciaries including the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

The aim of the Workshop was to build capacity of Pacific Island Courts to develop a better understanding of the data required to enable efficient management, performance monitoring and accountability.

The Workshop provides Judicial and Court Registry Officers from across the Pacific region with the opportunity to share, exchange and develop professional experience. Participants were also provided the skills and support to develop a Court Data Management Plan to collect, analyse and use data upon their return to local judiciaries.

The Regional Building Capacity in Data Management Workshop is one of the many conducted by the Pacific Judicial Strengthening Initiative to support courts across the Pacific region. The initiative is funded by New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade which has supported promoting the rule of law across the Pacific over recent years. The goal of the PJSI is to build fairer societies by supporting courts in the Pacific region to develop more accessible, just, efficient and responsive justice services. The Initiative operates in 14 countries, namely: Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
